I Capuleti e i Montecchi
by Vincenzo Bellini
Bellini’s bel canto retelling of the “Romeo and Juliet” story, here based on Italian literary sources rather than Shakespeare, sends us into a Verona of warring factions (not families) and roiling passion. Vibrant French mezzo-soprano Marie Lenormand makes a company debut and a rare United States staged opera appearance in the trouser role of Romeo and Korean soprano Hae Ji Chang—an exciting young artist on the rise and a remarkable New England Conservatory Artist Diploma student—makes her Boston professional debut as Giulietta. Emerging Russian tenor Sergey Romanovsky makes his United States stage debut as Tebaldo.
Sung in Italian with English titles
